01 The sneak-peek
South Africa, at the "Olympics of architecture"
When the Venice Architecture Biennale turned its spotlight on Africa for the first time, BBA Liminal helped represent South Africa — part of the team building and promoting the national pavilion, with an identity rooted in indigenous knowledge and a pre-opening party that filled Venice with South African sound.

02 The liminal moment
2023 was a pivotal year for the Biennale Architettura. For the first time, the world's foremost architecture exhibition — the "Olympics of architecture" — turned its spotlight on Africa and its diaspora, under curator Lesley Lokko's theme, the Laboratory of the Future. It became the second most-attended Biennale Architettura in history. For South Africa, the moment mattered: twelve South African architects joined the main programme, and the country was one of 64 to host a national pavilion.

03 The transformation
We threw a pre-opening party, Black Space. With DSAC, we organised Black Space — a pre-opening celebration at Ombra del Leone with DJ Oskido and Tbo Touch, a night of South African music and creativity that was booked to capacity, putting the country on the map before the doors opened.

04 The craft
Representing the South African brand in Venice
An identity, an event and a promotional push that put the country on the world stage: a visual language built on Dr Sechaba Maape's indigenous-knowledge artworks, a sold-out pre-opening celebration, and a campaign for the whole of Team SA.

05 The validation of purpose
The work helped South Africa make the most of a global moment. The 2023 Biennale drew 285,000 visitors — the second-highest in its history — with all eyes on Africa as the "Laboratory of the Future". South Africa's pre-opening celebration filled to capacity, and our promotion of Team SA reached 83,520 accounts on Facebook, building visibility for the pavilion and every South African taking part. The pavilion's preview drew Ambassador Jezile, Minister Zizi Kodwa and former President Thabo Mbeki.
